Development of Razor Wire Concertina from Barbed Wire
Originally barbed wire fulfilled the roll of perimeter security. As crime has escalated barbed wire became less and less effective. Petty thefts worsened and the need arose to replace barbed wire with a more effective alternative. The breakthrough came when a barbed fashioned tape was added to a high tensile wire. This product was given the name barbed tape / razor wire! The original product had short blades which were substantially more effective then the barbed wire product. Cochrane Steel pioneered the way forward from this point on. Realizing the barbed tape product modeled on the barbed wire was not nearly as effective as it could be they designed medium blade. Medium blade razor wire had a much sharper blade and quickly gained the reputation of being a low cost effective security product.
Perhaps the biggest development came when Cochrane introduced the ripper profile. The ripper took the medium blade profile and added a re-enforcing flange (see ripper specification). This simple development added so much strength to the coil it is now particularly difficult to crush or trample and even more difficult to cut then the previous products. Recently Cochrane introduced the tangle barrier as well as a military version of the ripper profile. As the blade profiles have increased so have the options of product Cochrane's offer. Razor Mesh, Electro-coil, Rapid Wire systems, Ribbon Mesh, Ribbon Strip, Razor Strip, 358 mesh, Hand deployment barriers as well as many other products have been designed and manufactured by Cochrane Steel Products to provide for any security requirement.
